A FREE afternoon of family fun is on offer as two Liverpool football teams go head-to-head in a new fixture in support of the Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal.
The Michael Causer Foundation is hosting the first ‘Home Cup’ clash next Sunday, June 8.
Liverpool Homeless Football Club will take on the Mersey Marauders, Liverpool’s gay football team, at Mossley Hill Athletic Club. Family and friends of murdered gay teenager Michael Causer will also be playing in the match.
And Lord Mayor Gary Millar will be in the firing line when he pulls on his goalie’s gloves to face a penalty shoot-out. Celebrity players, food and drink, a raffle and a five-a-side ladies’ match are also planned as part of the fun.
The event begins at the Mossley Hill Road club from 1.30pm and kick-off for the main match is at 2pm.
Members of the public are being invited to turn up for the event, which also aims to highlight issues affecting Liverpool’s homeless and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) communities.
The MCF also hopes the sporting fixture will motivate young people and promote health, well-being and team work through sport.
Interim chair of trustees Lynn Pates said: “The event is completely free and everybody is welcome to come along and join us.
“We’re really pleased to be working with the Mersey Marauders and Liverpool Homeless Football club to present the ‘Home Cup’. The foundation, set up in Michael Causer’s memory, exists to tackle homelessness, prejudice faced by the LGBT community, and also hopes to motivate young people so they can reach their full potential.
“Given these aims and what we’re trying to achieve in Michael’s memory, hosting the event is really fitting and we hope to have a great turn-out on Sunday.”
Gay Michael, aged 18, from Whiston, was brutally attacked at a house party in Huyton in 2008 and never recovered from his injuries.
The MCF was set up in his memory by his parents Mike and Marie. The foundation is one of Lord Mayor Gary Millar’s official charities.
The ‘Home Cup’ event has been organised with support from Liverpool Charity and Voluntary Services (LCVS) and the Lord Mayor’s Charity Committee.
